Corn Flour Soup | Creamy, Tasty, and Easy

Corn flour soup is extremely tasty and it is probably everyone’s favorite dish globally. You might be amazed to learn that it is so easy to put together. We just stir in a few ingredients and it is done. I have to admit that I like the creamy taste which occurs naturally due to cornstarch. However, you must pay attention to using the organic version. It is a must as we are all aware of the side effects of genetically modified corn. In simple terms, nobody needs that in their food.

Corn is a staple food ingredient all around the world. The first domesticated version dates back about nine thousand years in Mexico. By the way, Mexico is the ultimate haven for corn fans. If you ever visit, you might find out about more than fifty distinctive types. They come in many different colors and shapes, even in blue and purple. It is no coincidence that corn is heavily used in Mexican cuisine, of which I am a true and loyal fan.

Did you know that corn always has an even number of rows for each ear (the spiked part)? This is due to the fact that each corn spikelet is borne in pairs. I always consider it a special food. It is unfortunate that commercial food companies turned it into a beast. Anyways, as long as you consume organic corn, there is no need to shy away and you can still enjoy delicious foods made from this miracle ingredient!

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of salted butter, softened

  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 3 tablespoons of organic corn flour

  • 3 cups of milk (see notes if you want to omit)

  • 2 cups of water

  • 1 chicken bouillon (see notes if you want to omit)

  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric

Directions

  • Combine butter and olive oil in a large saucepan.
  • Once the butter melts down, add in three tablespoons of corn flour and continue to stir for about five to seven minutes (the corn flour will get a darker color-brown).
  • Add in half a teaspoon of ground ginger and a quarter teaspoon of ground turmeric.
  • Gradually add in three cups of milk.
  • Add two cups of water.
  • Make sure to stir continuously until it starts to boil.
  • Add in one chicken bouillon and one teaspoon of ground black pepper. Notice that we do not add salt since the chicken bouillon takes care of that.
  • Use a stick blender (hand blender) to puree the soup.
  • Continue to cook over low heat for another five minutes.

Notes

  • Add some organic corn kernels to this recipe for extra decoration and yumminess. (About two-three tablespoons would be sufficient)
  • If you do not use chicken bouillon, add one teaspoon of salt to the mixture when mixing in other spices.
  • If you want to omit milk from the recipe, you need to add two more cups of water.
  • You may add two pieces of baby carrots, one diced white onion, one teaspoon of grated fresh ginger, and two garlic cloves (minced) to further elevate the nutrition value of this recipe. Combining garlic, onion, and ginger is a good way to flush out toxins from your system.

Can I use corn flour in soup?

Adding corn flour to soups helps to thicken them. However, corn flour also improves the flavor significantly when compared to wheat flour. It is recommended to add one to three tablespoons in general. As a basic rule, combine three tablespoons of corn flour and three tablespoons of the soup in a small bowl. Add this mixture to the pan and cook well to get rid of any raw flour taste.

Is corn flour good for health?

Corn flour provides better nutritional health benefits when compared to all-purpose wheat flour. If you use organic corn flour, it may help to decrease the inflammation in your body. However, make sure to stay away from the genetically modified version. Also, note that corn flour is easy to digest as it contains fibers like cellulose, lignin, amylose. On a side note, decrease corn flour in your diet if you want to lose weight and cut down on carbs since it can have a negative effect when consumed in excess.

Can I substitute corn flour for regular flour?

Yes, you can substitute corn flour for regular flour in your recipes. Note that corn flour and cornstarch are the same things. In general, it is used as a thickening agent in soups and sauces. However, corn flour will create a crisper coating than wheat flour. Plus, it will absorb less oil during frying. That is why it is heavily used by many fast-food chains (fried chicken). As a general guide, replace one tablespoon of wheat flour with 1/2 tablespoon of corn flour since wheat flour has about half the thickening power.
